IFRIQIYYA ÉLECTRIQUE
A Concert-Road-Movie from the Trans-Aeolian Transmission.
The ultimate ritual of Adorcism. From the deep-heart of Chott el Djerid, desert of Salt, Sahara, Tunisia. No World-Music : just real transe. Nothing fancy, but real, sweaty and absolutely timeless. No Post-Card, no Tourism, no Surrender.
No theatre or stage or audience. The rûwâhîne have been invited to perform in the street and are possessing, contorting, the bodies of the Banga. Teenagers leap to the floor, their legs tense, arch-like, a fixed gaze in their eyes; girls dance wildly, moulding and accelerating the rhythm of the tablas, the cries of the women, though, are not loud enough to drown out the tchektchekas’ implacable metallic sound. Spouts of water rise up, and fall with a heavy slap, while benzoin vapours wrap themselves around our waists. We are far, far away, where “according to the symbolism of the genes deep objectives, along with social causes, are a catharsis, a purification of the soul through ecstasy; this is the form assumed by the mysticism of a minority that has been excluded, oppressed, exiled to Africa’s Islamic societies." (Viviana Pâques, ne L'arbre cosmique dans la pensée populaire et dans la vie quotidienne du nord-ouest africain, Institute for Ethnology, Paris, 1964.)
